Your card fees drop 1 Oct. Your rate won't.
Everyone's talking about losing the surcharge. Nobody's mentioning the other half: the same day, the RBA cuts what Square, Tyro and Zeller pay. If you're on a flat 1.6%, your price doesn't move. Their cost collapses. They keep the gap.
| What the RBA caps on 1 Oct | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Debit & prepaid interchange | ~0.50% | 8c flat |
| Consumer credit interchange | 0.80% | 0.30% |
| Foreign-issued cards | uncapped | 1.00% |
| Your flat rate with Square / Tyro / Zeller: unchanged. Nobody renegotiates it for you. | ||

How this is worked out: post-1 Oct interchange of 8c flat on debit and 0.30% on consumer credit, plus ~0.10% scheme fees and a 0.45% acquirer margin — a realistic competitive rate, not a best case. Your actual quote depends on your provider and volume. Estimate only, not financial advice.

Won't my provider just drop my rate automatically?
Almost certainly not. Flat-rate plans are priced by the provider, not by the caps. When their input cost falls and your price doesn't, the difference is theirs to keep until you ask.
Can I still charge customers a card fee after 1 October?
No — not on eftpos, Visa or Mastercard debit, prepaid or credit. A "processing fee" that's really the same surcharge is still a surcharge. What stays legal: a discount for bank transfer or cash, and callout, after-hours and weekend fees. Both are written up for you in the pack.
I'm a one-man band. Is this overkill?
The opposite. Small operators sit closest to the caps, so you have the most to claw back — and nobody in the office to chase it.
What if my state's rules are different?
The card changes are federal and identical everywhere. The invoice, variation and unpaid-invoice documents come in NSW, VIC, QLD, WA and SA versions.
General information only — not legal or financial advice. Dollar figures are estimates based on the assumptions shown above the calculator. Your own costs depend on your provider agreement, volume and card mix.
